A History of Tri-County Camera Club
Tri-County Camera Club (TCCC) has been one of New Jersey's leading camera clubs for more than 60 years. To draw members from the Hudson, Essex and Bergen areas, it named itself after those three counties. Today, it includes members from Passaic, Morris and other counties as well.
TCCC earned its original fame as a home for black and white prints, when photographers like Gus Cantelmo and Heinz Otto earned respect across the state. Later it gained pre-eminence in color photography and nature photography, and has been the home of such members as Gil Lopez Espina, Peter Lekos, and Phil Echo.
Members have been meeting in Nutley since 1963, first at the Nutley Museum, a former schoolhouse, and currently at the Nutley High School. Meetings have always been held on Tuesdays at 8pm, and have ranged from two to four Tuesdays each month. Originally, meetings focused on competitions in color slides and black and white prints. As the color slide entries grew, these competitions were divided into three categories: beginner, intermediate, and advanced (or salon).
With growth, additional competitions and activities were added. Members began to compete in nature, creative and assigned subject photography as well. Programs included lectures, workshops, demonstrations, member exhibitions, and field trips. With the arrival of digital photography, and with more members printing their own photographs at home, interest was revived in prints, especially color prints. A digital projector was purchased, allowing greater efficiency as competition images can be submitted in advance over the internet instead of being brought in as slides for each meeting. However, the club still runs competitions using both digital media and projected slides, to accommodate those members that have not yet made the leap into digital photography.
Members join TCCC today to learn more about taking good photographs, to see the work of top photographers in the area, and to share their own photographic ideas with others. Given its diverse and successful history, TCCC is now primed to become the home of a new generation of photographers.
TCCC is a member of New Jersey Federation of Camera Clubs (NJFCC) and the Photographic Society of America (PSA). As a club, we have successfully participated in competitions held within both organizations, earning first place in both the nature and creative categories. Members have also received individual ribbons, medals and trophies on both the state and national levels. For years, TCCC has also participated each year in a tri-club color competition with the Ridgewood and Teaneck camera clubs.
